Well, this phase of the carving is nearly complete. I've removed roughly half of the mass of the original stone, and have brought Wopos vision of five swallows into reality. It's been a great experience. The stone is a beautiful granite with flecks of purple (quartz, I think) that I'm told likely came from Dunstable originally.

Now it's on to getting the pieces for the woodpecker carving, for the Centennial Island Bridge.

Well, it's getting closer to being done. I've started defining the far two swallows. Once I've gotten all five to this rough finish, I'll go back and refine the details further. A back injury set me back a bit, but things are looking up.

Here's an image from when I first started removing the excess granite, when the design plan called for four birds to be standing on an incline, and a fifth one to be carved in relief on the far end.
